You are probably aware that there has been a general trend toward increased academic use of various types of online learning to reduce costs and improve access and results. Simio has been making steady progress toward supporting this goal. COVID-19 has inspired more urgency to this transition.
In addition to the videos, e-books, and other materials that have been in regular use for years, we have two new offerings that we had planned to make available for use later this year, but have now expedited to make them immediately available in case they can help complete your courses currently in progress.
These offerings are based on a just-completed On-Line Simio University Course used in the commercial sector, but adapted for academic use. While this course is regularly sold commercially for $2,000 per student, we are making both offerings below available for free to accredited academic institutions.
- A Canvas LMS version of the commercial course . This supplements the commercial materials with additional materials not typically taught in our commercial classes (like queueing theory) and adds more rigor to the testing. This is designed as an on-line course (e.g. no live, in-person meetings). It includes videos, self-grading quizzes, and homework assignments with solutions. Further it is designed as a “flipped” course which allows the on-line videos to do the basic teaching and then supports the instructor adding enrichment through optional live (virtual) classes. This course is ready to adopt as-is or to adapt to your own needs.
- A comprehensive set of YouTube videos. If you are only looking for supporting materials, all the raw videos are being made available via YouTube channels. While all the videos for a full course are included in a recommended order, the instructor can assign any videos in any order to supplement other teaching. These videos include both instructional and workshop videos suitable for use in a lab. The workshop solutions are also separately available to verified instructors.
If you are already teaching a Simio-based simulation course, you can easily step into using these materials, either for a summer or fall course or perhaps even to help you complete a course in progress that has been interrupted by COVID-19.
If you are not yet teaching a Simio-based course, look to the Simio Academic Pages to see all the benefits to you and your students of adopting Simio and how quickly and easily you can convert to Simio based on a free software grant.
If either of the above online learning alternatives will contribute to improving your program, instructors can apply: https://www.simio.com/academics/simio-remote-classroom.php.
